As a child grows, so does his or her intellect and understanding of the world. Toys are an integral part of that development process which will ultimately help motor and mental skills. This is why it is important for parents to get them age appropriate toys which will help in whatever part of their brain is developing at the moment.

Here are some suggestions of toys suitable for your children.

1

0-6 Months Old
At this stage your baby is unable to hold anything yet but is able to discover sights and sounds with their eyes and ears. They are also discovering the concept of self and how they are separate entities from their parents. They are very attracted to bright colours and can follow faces with their eyes. Toys suitable for this age are brightly coloured soft toys that are safe to bite and can make noises.  Some good toys for this age include:

  • Soft dolls
  • Brightly coloured mobiles

  • Recordings of songs, lullabies and rhymes

7-12 Months Old
At this stage your child has better control of their hands and can hold on and pick things up. They are also able to sit up and start building things. They can now respond to their own names and make attempts to communicate using gurgling sounds. They understand relationships. They will also learn to start crawling around and exploring beyond the confines of their cribs. Some good toys at this point include:

1-3 Years Old
At this age, children tend to be more physical and very energetic. All this energy has to be channeled healthily as children tend to get very curious and explore various things on their own. They are also capable of more force with their hands and bodies. As they grow older they are also able to understand instructions that some things should not be put into their mouths. Some considerations of toys for this stage include:

  • Modelling clay or plasticine

3-6 Years Old

At this stage your child will be able to converse well and they’ll be asking a lot of questions. They’ll also be starting kindergarten and making lots of new friends and playing with other children their own age. Their motor and mental skills are becoming more complex and they enjoy more challenging games. Here are toys suitable for this age:

  • Complex puzzles that involve matching things according to size
