Just like how our car engine oil needs a clean-up every few months, our body especially the digestive system requires a clean-up once in a while too. The benefits of a detox are many and it includes boosting your energy and immune system, purging excess waste, promoting weight loss and having a clearer mind.

If you’ve been snacking on junk food, sugary drinks and processed food regularly, you may experience feeling bloated and lethargic. This is mainly because your digestive system isn’t getting the nutrients it needs and is working overtime trying to get rid of the junk you’re putting in.  It’s prime time that you get a detox.

Getting started

A detox is usually a week long change in your diet. Although it means you will have to forgo your normal roti canai and teh tarik for breakfast and munching on those potato crisps while watching TV, it doesn’t mean you can’t have tasty food during a detox session. Here are some dietary suggestions for a more delicious detox:

Add colours to your food

During your detox (and preferably after that as well) fill your plate with a mixture of colours from fruits and vegetables.

Try to eat oranges, strawberries, grapes, apples, carrots, spinach, broccoli, celery, cauliflower and beet root. The reason for this is because the colours in the fruits and vegetables represent the different nutrients they contain. So playing around with this mix of colours in your fruits and veggies ensures that you’re getting a balance of nutrients plus they’re tasty too.

Load up on protein

Who says you can’t have meat during a detox? It’s all about the way it’s prepared. Try to eat lots of fish like salmon and tuna and white meat such as chicken and turkey during your detox. Just make sure these food are not fried and but cooked in a more healthier way such as grilled, baked or steamed.

Protein can also be obtained from legumes such as chickpeas, kidney beans and from vegetables like tofu and tempeh.

Snack attack

Yes you can have snacks during your detox. Choose to eat raw nuts such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts or seeds like sunflower and pumpkin. These will boost your heart health and keep the junk food craving at bay.

Avoid sugar

If you thought that sugar makes your world go round, because you need it in every part of your meal, you’re wrong. Many of us consume way too much sugar without realizing it. Substitute your morning coffee with a cup of water with a squeeze of lemon. It works better at waking up your senses and your digestive system. Use honey for your cooking if you need a dash of sweetness in your meal.
