The rising prices of goods and services means that many of us will have to tighten our lunchtime budget and cut down on trips to our favorite cafes or pricey restaurants. Instead, the working class is expected to pack more lunches from home or even cook at our workplaces.
Preparing meals from home can be tiring as it requires you or your spouse to wake up way earlier and prepare food in the wee hours of the morning before hitting the road and facing the daily traffic congestion. However, life doesn’t have to be difficult for you or your loved ones as here are some tips to make fast, cheap and healthy lunch packs that will keep you going throughout the day.
Include plenty vegetables and fruit
It goes without saying that fresh vegetables and fruits are key to keeping healthy. You can incorporate vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers in sandwiches and wraps, whereas chickpeas, beans and apples make the perfect salad.
If you’re into traditional cooking, try steaming your veges and top them with a dash of soy sauce and sesame oil.
Things to avoid
One of the first ingredients you can cut down on would be coconut milk or santan. Not only do dishes containing santan spoil easily, they are also high in fats and cholesterol. Consuming it once in a while is okay, but not more than once or twice a week.
If you want to make a curry or any other dish that requires santan, try soymilk instead as a replacement. Other things you should be cutting down on would be fatty oils, monosodium glutamate and salt, as well as fried foods.
Time Saving Techniques
Planning ahead is key in saving time. Try to vary your menu for the week with several different carbohydrate sources like bread, noodles, pasta or rice.
Rice, pasta and noodles can be prepared beforehand and kept in the chiller for the next day. You can also prepare things like fruits, biscuits and cereals as side dishes to last the entire week on weekends. Alternatively, use leftovers from dinner the night before to whip up something for the next day.
