Steamboat parties are to Asians what Barbeques are to Westerners. It’s a relaxing get together full of good food and good company. The steamboat, or hot pot is a comforting and simple way of dining that doesn’t require you to be a good cook. Anyone and everyone can do it, as it merely involves putting all your favourite ingredients into one pot and boiling up a storm.

Eating a steamboat meal outside is a viable option, but if you want to organize a steamboat session at home for budget reasons, here are some helpful tips:

In order to avoid any flame related accidents like burns or fires, it would be a good idea to get a steamboat pot that functions on electricity. If you have many guests, you should prepare several pots at a ratio of about 5 people to one pot. This means that if 20 people are coming you should have at least 4 steamboat pots around. If you cram too many people to one pot, things can get uncomfortable for your guests.

Prepare the soup base and have several types, so that guests can choose. The simplest soup base would be a chicken stock, which you can make by boiling some chicken bones and feet, with some Chinese herbs. Other popular soup base includes spicy Tomyam, Sour and Spicy (Malat) Soup and Vegetable broth. Remember to prepare more soup in case the pots need refilling.

Adjust the amount of ingredients according to the number of people coming. A great alternative is to get your guests to bring their own ingredients. The usual things to throw into the pot includes seafood like fish, shellfish, crabs and prawns, as well as any raw meats. Remember to put these in plain without any seasoning or marinade, as they will soak up the soup’s flavours. Tofu, mushrooms, root vegetables and leafy greens can also go in, as well as fishballs, meatballs and seafood rolls. Tip: Tesco Malaysia offers home delivery!

Don’t forget to prepare a dipping sauce for your guests, the most common types include chili sauce, tomato sauce, soy sauce and the like.
